How to get to Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico?

All the events are taking place in the vicinity of Mérida in Yucatán state. When booking your travels from abroad you can plan to fly to Mérida, Cancún or Mexico City.

Flying to Mérida: There are direct flights from Dallas, San Diego, Houston and Miami in the US, as well as internal flights in Mexico from Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and León.

Flying to Cancún: There are several direct flights from cities in Europe, including London, Frankfurt, Paris and Madrid. If you fly to and from Cancun, you need to book a taxi (in advance or at the airport) to take you to Mérida, Yucatán, which is about three hours drive. Cancún is in Quintana Roo state and does not support Uber, unlike Mérida, Yucatán, where you can use Uber as normal. Some recommendations:

OPTION 1: take a bus to Mérida from the Cancun airport with the line https://www.ado.com.mx/ Arriving at the Cancun airport, ask where the ADO buses leave in the terminal. They are commonly outside going out into the street.

OPTION 2: Rent a van that will pick you up at the Cancun airport and take you to Mérida by toll road. The cost per unit is $6,200* ($340 USD) and the capacity per van is 8 passengers plus luggage. The rate includes transportation expenses.
To confirm the rental of the van, the flight information is needed 30 days in advance, it can be paid at the time of confirmation by Paypal or transfer, plus a 6% bank charge or in cash upon arrival, upon boarding. All units have a/c, diamond level insurance, cooler with bottled water, optimal general conditions.

Any questions or clarification do not hesitate to ask.

*Please consider that the rate may be subject to change in 2023

Flying to Mexico City: This might be the best option for people flying from Asia as there are direct flights from Tokyo and Seoul; as well as Vancouver, Istanbul and Sao Paulo. You might want to spend some days here and take an internal flight to Mérida afterwards.

Info for Norwegians: the cheapest and more convenient option might be to book a flight from Norway to London, Madrid or another travel hub in Europe using a local European carrier, and then book a direct return flight from that city to Cancun or to Mexico City. British Airways for instance fly London Gatwick to Cancun, but the flights with British Airways from Oslo tend to land at Heathrow, so you need to travel between the two airports, which can take 3 hours. In this case, you might be better off flying Norwegian Air to Gatwick, and then get your BA flight from London.

For travellers travelling via the US: remember you will need an ESTA or a visa to transit in the US. They will also take away any liquids (even the mezcal you hid in your shampoo bottle) you have on transit and you might be required to do another bag check on your way to Mexico.

Is Mexico safe?

In Norwegian media, Mexico and Southern Sweden (where Seb’s sister lives), are portrayed as dangerous war-torn countries. Needless to say, that’s not the case. Seb has survived multiple trips. He’s even made friends with the police. You’ll be fine.

Is Mexico in North, South, or Central America?

Please avoid this question at all costs. If you are unsure, please google NAFTA. If still unsure, Latin America is a handy term. Also, don’t ever ask Ricardo.

Will there be other events the week after your wedding?

There will not be a formal programme, but the wedding couple will travel to Tulum later that week to continue the celebrations and for sun and relaxation at the beach. Contact the couple for more details.

Where else to visit?

Cancun

Cancun is the US of A in Mexico, a popular spring break destination. That said, the strip of hotels on the beach front makes for an easy travel destination and some lazy days with sun and fun, and family friendly resorts where you will get a proper Santa Maria Tex-Mex fajita experience.

Tulum

For the hipster beach revellers, seeking acai bowls and champagne, Tulum is the place to go. Electronic beach clubs and young, hip vibes with beautiful beaches.

Mexico City

Mexico City is the heart of Mexico, and just a four-hour drive from Leon, Guanajuato, where Ricardo grew up.

Children and our wedding

The events will be for adults only. We would have loved to include all the little ones, but we have calculated that our wonderful friends have brought no less than 97 beautiful humans into the world under the age of 13, in no insignificant way contributing to breaking the 8 billion people record. We love bouncy castles but we won’t be able to cater to such a large little crowd for the evening while keeping it kid safe. The events will therefore be parents only.

We fully understand that most of our friends are travelling far to come to celebrate, and you would bring your little ones as part of your family vacation, including our own family. Fear not, there are wonderful professional nanny services available in close proximity to the venue and at the hotels you would be staying who can be put in touch with the wedding organisers, recommended by our relatives in Mexico. We will also have regular transport to Mérida city centre throughout the evening so you can go back to your hotel at your convenience. Please do send us any questions on this topic.

Is there a dress code?

Have you met us? Of course there are multiple dress codes!  Will you be shunned if you don’t follow the dress code? Of course not! The dress code is a guide. We love you just the way you are and the most important thing is that you feel comfortable as your own self. However, we would appreciate it if you could have a look at what we have pictured for the respective events that you will be attending. Remember that it will be warm. Norwegians, please feel free to bring and wear your Bunad, but you will be HOT (visually and physically).

What will the weather be like?

Yucatán weather in October tends to be around 25-30 degrees during the day and down to 21 degrees in the evening. Average temperatures range between min 22.3°C (72.1°F) and max 31.5°C (88.7°F).

October is a great month to visit! By now, we’re entering the dry season, and the temperatures, humidity and mosquitoes have let up. Although we still suggest you bring mosquito repellent as your sweet, sweet foreign blood is likely to be irresistible to them.

Daylight

In October, the average length of the day in Mérida is 11h and 40min. On the first day of the month, sunrise is at 6:49 am and sunset at 6:46 pm CDT. On the last day of October, in Mérida, sunrise is at 6:00 am and sunset at 5:23 pm CST.

What is a taco cat?

Tacocat is the best palindrome ever and a highly appropriate discussion topic for the event.
